Can’t judge a book by its cover

Luna, the brindle pug

Before rescuing Luna, we knew that she had some issues.  One of her issues is that she is missing patches of fur.  Most of the fur loss was caused by an untreated case of mange.  There are other patches of missing fur that the vet can only speculate why they went missing.  In any case, as you can see from the pictures above, Luna has a very spotty coat and the dark areas are where she is actually missing fur.

Now this is only a cosmetic issue.  The vet has said that she is no worse for the wear if her fur never grows back.  It doesn’t bother me and it certainly doesn’t bother Luna.  On her walks, she proudly prances down the street like she has the coat of a Yorkshire terrier.

But while Luna’s fur situation is no concern for us, we do get some odd reactions from others while we are out.  The most common is that someone will exclaim, “Oh, look a spotted pug!”  I always laugh when I hear this one because from afar it does totally look like Luna is spotted.  The most interesting response I have had is that someone asked if Luna was brindle.  I thought this was a dignified way of putting things.

Luna’s fur situation always makes for interesting conversation when we first meet someone.  At first they see Luna and her missing fur, but after being around her for about 5 minutes you no longer see the missing fur.  Instead, all you see is a charming pug, with tons of personality that is outgoing, optimistic and completely unfazed by anything that has happened in the past and is totally living in the moment, enjoying every second of every day.

About Benny:

Benjamin

While petting Benjamin on one of our walks, our neighbor’s 7 year old son, who is madly in love with Benjamin, admiringly said, “I wish I had a cuter puppy!”  They just don’t get much cuter than Benny!

The Lounge Chair

The Lounge Chair

Here we have Benjamin and Luna sunning themselves poolside on one of our very relaxing loungers.  I bought the lounger about a year ago with grand visions of relaxing Saturdays spent poolside on this comfy chair.  Yeah, right!  I don’t know what I was thinking.  Even though I don’t get to use it very often it is good to know that Benjamin, Henry and Luna put it to good use.  Rarely does a day go by that at least one of them doesn’t spend some time chilling on the lounge chair.

Sunday - Turkey cooking day

Cooking turkey

Benjamin, Henry and Luna are all on a special, homemade diet.  The main ingredient in their special food is ground turkey.  To make things easier during the week, Sunday is the designated turkey cooking day.  Each Sunday we cook anywhere from 10-15 packages of ground turkey.  Needless to say, it can be a tedious task, but overall it is worth all the effort.  Since we switched to the new diet almost 3 years ago many of Benjamin and Henry’s digestion issues have been cured.  Since adopting Luna, she has been transitioned over to the new diet as well.  Out of all three of them, I would say that Luna likes the food the most.  She just goes nuts for the turkey.

While we cook the turkey and get everything prepped for the week, Benjamin, Henry and Luna all wait patiently in the kitchen watching our every move and just hoping that a bite of turkey will fall on the floor.

Henry’s Favorite Things

Henry's Favorite things

After swimming and playing fetch in the pool, Henry loves to go in the yard and roll in the grass.  This time, he took a slice of his watermelon Rip’Em, his favorite toy, in the yard with him.  He was having a good time flinging his toy around the yard and rolling in the grass.  All while soaking up the sun.  This was an ideal day for Hank.

Loves His “Puffy”

Benjamin with his Puffy

Benjamin just loves his “puffy”!  Benjamin’s “puffy” is a furry little plush toy in the shape of a disk.  There is nothing spectacular about it, but he has had a weird bond with it ever since he was a puppy.  He will not go to bed unless he has his “puffy” with him and he even brings it out in the yard with him when he suns himself.

He has had his “puffy” for about 4 years now, so needless to say that we have had to wash the furry little disk a few times.  Each time it goes in the wash, we cross our fingers and wait with baited breath hoping that it will come out in tact.  I don’t want to have to be the one that tells Benny that the washing machine ate his “puff.”

We have tried on many occasions to buy a backup “puffy”, but Benjamin rejects them all.  There is only one original!

Enjoying the long Weekend

Luna waiting to get out of the pool

Memorial Day Weekend was a lot of fun this year.  I really enjoyed having the extra day off and we got a chance to do a lot of things this weekend.  We did some work around the house, took a little day trip, relaxed, and swam in the pool.  Luna tested the waters again and she did really well.  While she was swimming we tried to teach her that if she wants to get out she needs to swim to the steps.  She caught on pretty quick.  She would swim over and stand with her hind paws on the top step and her front two paws on the edge of the pool.  She would not jump out herself.  Instead she would just wait for someone to give her a little extra boost with their hand before she would hop out of the pool.
